Three Combs: Chapter 50.1

[Previous][Table of Contents][Next]

At the end of the year, Fu Ting Chuan’s studio ushered in the New Year’s holiday, with a total of 15 vacation days.

The employees clapped and celebrated. It’s good that the boss is in love, their Lunar New Year holiday doubles!

As the eve of the new year approaches, it means Jiang Tiao and Fu Ting Chuan would have to separate for some time.

Although they are reluctant to part, they haven’t gotten their marriage certificate. It would be inappropriate to be glued together and visit relatives in the New Year.

Jiang Tiao couldn’t continue to delay staying in Beijing. On the 27th day of the twelfth lunar month, she packed her luggage and prepared to hop on the evening flight back to Suzhou.

Fu Ting Chuan silently sat on the sofa and stared at her as she packed.

The woman sat on the bed, her head lowered as she folded her clothes. Her black hair flowed over her shoulder, covering her face, only showing her white nose.

The sun soaked her in gold light.

She is like a dream, beautiful and surreal.

Jiang Tiao felt Fu Ting Chuan watching her and looked up, “Why are you sitting there foolishly? Help me pack.”

Fu Ting Chuan immediately put one hand on the armrest and childishly resist, “No–––”

Jiang Tiao asked, “No what?”

Fu Ting Chuan, “I won’t help you pack. That way you will stay longer.”

Jiang Tiao folded the clothes in her hand, “It’s not like I won’t be coming back.”

Fu Ting Chuan leaned back on the sofa cushion and sighed, “You’ve only been here for a month, and now we have to separate for ten or so days ...my life as a boyfriend is too bitter.”

Jiang Tiao was teased by his words, “Bear with it. It’s only a few days. We have been through longer.”

Fu Ting Chuan rubbed his temple, “Okay…”

After a while, Jiang Tiao finished packing her clothes and zipped up her suitcase. Fu Ting Chuan got up from the sofa.

“Wait.”

He went downstairs right after.

When he returned to the bedroom, there was a round white item in his hand with a black cable connected to it.

Fu Ting Chuan rummaged around and found a white paper box to put the thing inside. Then he handed it to Jiang Tiao, “Take this back with you.”

Jiang Tiao opened the lid, “What is it?”

“I have shown it to you before. It is the camera used to monitor Little Riceball.”

Jiang Tiao was suspicious, “Why are you giving it to me?”

“When you go back, put it in your room.

Jiang Tiao, “....”

She pushed the box into his chest, “You pervert!”

Fu Ting Chuan, “How is it perverted?”

“This is to monitor house pets and watch for intruders. Who would be like you and use it to monitor people.”

“This isn’t for surveillance, it’s to admire. Help ease the feeling of lovesickness.” Fu Ting Chuan reasonably justified.

“I’m not bringing it!” When she thought about going back and having her room seen by him, she felt some unspeakable shame, “Hell no!”

“Whatever you want.” Fu Ting Chuan took back the box and put it in a drawer. He returned back to sitting on the sofa.

He just silently sat there with a dark and gloomy look on his face.

Jiang Tiao snuck a glance at him and thought, this guy….is probably angry?

She slowly walked toward him and stopped in front of him. She squatted down and looked at him face-to-face, “Hey–––angry?”

Fu Ting Chuan didn’t say a word.

Jiang Tiao shook his arm, “Can’t you think of another way. Why does it have to be this.”

Fu Ting Chuan continued to remain silent.

Jiang Tiao held his face in her hand, “Okay, don’t be angry. Can we not use the camera? I will give you a daily report and video chat every day. Okay?”

When Fu Ting Chuan heard her, he raised his hand to hold hers, “You said it.”

Jiang Tiao smiled and pinched his face, “I have a New Year gift for you.”

“What?”

Jiang Tiao walked back to her luggage, took out a gift box, and handed it to him.

Fu Ting Chuan carefully opened it…..inside was a wooden comb, exactly the same as the watercolor wooden comb depicted in her avatar. At the end was a hole which a blue concentric knot was tied to.

“The mahogany comb was personally carved and polished by me. I did it during my university days and planned to give it to….my future husband.”

Fu Ting Chuan raised a brow, “Who did you think your husband was going to be?”

Jiang Tiao confessed, “I don’t know but I never imagined it being you.”

Fu Ting Chuan deeply laughed, “Besides me, who else do you want to marry?”

“At the time, I was only an unimpressive fan. I didn’t dare to dream about anything more.” Jiang Tiao refuted.

Fu Ting Chuan picked up the gift, “Okay. Why gift me a comb? What’s so special about it?”

Jiang Tiao firmly answered, “Because a comb is a beautiful object. In ancient times, during the Qixi Festival, many couples would gift each other a comb as a token of their love. Up to now, at some weddings, there is still the hair combing ceremony. While combing the bride’s hair, they would chant, ‘One comb so you may be together all your lives from beginning till the end, two combs so you may have a harmonious intimate marriage till old age, three combs so you may fill your home with your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all over the place, four combs so you may enjoy abundant wealth and an everlasting marriage’…..”

After patiently listening to her, Fu Ting Chuan smiled softly and touched her cheek, “Okay. I will accept and treasure it.”
